Newsflash – that (still delicious) cappuccino is so last century. I was drinking Cortado before it was cool…honest.
If you run a coffee business, chances are you’ll already know that coffee drinkers can be a fickle crowd. Customer coffee tastes change all the time as preparations fall in and out of fashion – whereas once the cappuccino was seen as the height of sophistication, it’s seen as somewhat gauche by hipsters and trendy types sipping on their flat whites!
Want to stay ahead of the curve? Cater to the cool crowd with some of these 8 on-trend coffees.
1. Bulletproof
A favourite of healthy living types looking for a morning energy boost, the Bulletproof teams espresso with butter and coconut oil. It’s actually pretty delicious in coffee, creating a thick, rich and slightly creamy drink that will keep you going till mid morning.
2. The Gibraltar
Developed in San Francisco, this cult coffee is quickly finding favour in cities worldwide. Like a taller, milkier Macchiato, it features a double shot of espresso with enough milk to cool the coffee down for instant drinking. The name comes from the glass the coffee was originally served in – a ‘Gibraltar’ tumbler from American glass manufacturer Libbey.
3. Cortado
This traditional Spanish preparation fits somewhere between a Gibraltar and a Latte – and the result is an accessible but grown up coffee. The name Cortado comes from the Spanish word ‘cut’ – referring to the way the espresso is cut with the steamed milk.
4. Guillermo
Coffee and lime might not sound like a good match, but cutting sharp citrus fruits with coffee works surprisingly well, and complements good fruity espresso. Simply pour espresso over a couple of slices of lime, and serve with or without milk. You might also want to consider an Espresso Romano, which substitutes the lime for lemon.
5. Shakerato
This sophisticated iced coffee provides the ultimate in refreshment on a hot summer’s day. It’s actually pretty simple – pour espresso over some ice cubes and simple syrup (you can use flavoured syrups if you like), then shake in a cocktail shaker until the espresso is frothy, sweet and chilled. Strain into a Martini glass for the last word in coffee luxury!
6. Con Panna
Con Panna is luxurious, calorific and just a bit naughty – it’s a great coffee for those who find a simple espresso a bit boring, or need a comforting pick me up on a bad day! Preparing a con panna is easy – just top a single or double shot of espresso with a big dollop of whipped cream.
7. Macchiato
Ok, so this one is hardly new – but it’s definitely worthy of inclusion on the list. A Macchiato is a single or double espresso, ‘marked’ (read topped) with some milk foam. Popular with the evening crowd, it’s a trendy after dinner coffee.
8. Breve
Breve is becoming increasingly trendy, and it’s easy to see why – espresso topped with half milk, half cream tastes just as good as it sounds! Named after the Italian word for ‘short’, it’s a great addition to any coffee menu.
