At www.thebigcoffee.com we love to research what’s hot and happening in the Street Food world – this helps us gain inspiration and keep our designs on point and fresh. So, we thought that we’d pay London a visit – the UK’s Street Food capital. This just happened to coincide with the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee weekend – and what an incredible weekend it was !!!

From our arrival into Kings Cross station, we were met by street food traders from every corner of the globe. First stop was an easy choice: A BIG COFFEE of course or, in our case, a freshly prepared flat white poured from a classic Fracino lever machine. This added instant theatre to the pouring of a simple coffee, whilst preparing Espresso in the traditional way. The vehicle of choice in this case was a Retro Citroen HY van painted in a 1950’s pale blue and cream. There were stacks of small quirky Catering trailers on show and the Catering Pods stood out as a popular choice especially for the Coffee Pods and small trailers.

Whilst we carried out our ‘market research’ or, as some have said, an excuse for filling our faces, the next stop was the home of British Street food, Borough Market. This place is a symphony of flavours  and influences from around the World. You will find Espresso sold from our personal favourite the Piaggio Ape to Authentic Mexican dishes as well as Cuban Burritos – this place has the lot! Lunch was fast approaching so we went for the kill and devoured a Mexican chilli burrito, filled with chicken and peppers and special hot chilli sauce; this was an old family recipe and top secret.

The Bank Holiday weekend was now in full swing; the vibe was brilliant and the party atmosphere was contagious. This might be partly explained by the sheer number of ‘fizz’ vans around the City; the creativity was incredible – we found a pink London bus, fully converted to sell Snog frozen Yoghurt and a retro London black cab which had been repurposed for use as an ice cream van … the list was endless. The best was saved for last when we discovered an old Airstream trailer branded with Crispy Crème Donut’s. We were on full by this point but couldn’t resist one of those bad boys…

With full stomachs and inspiration coming out of our ears we headed back to Mobile Retail HQ to put some ideas into practice.
